Roger Greenberg - Sketches of the West for Saxophone Quartet
When writing Sketches of the West, my intention was to present musical pictures that would inspire listeners, in their imaginition, to use all their senses: hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch, combined with emotional feelings, including peace, beauty, excitement and happiness. Sunrise on the Prairie opens in darkness in a minor key, and switches to major as the sun appears on the horizon. The flowers bloom, animals awaken, and the prairie becomes alive with the brilliance of the day. Native American Serenity, written on the minor pentatonic scale of the Native American flute, depicts the peacefulness of a Native American Village. Stampede begins with a herd of buffalo grazing on the prairie. A threat occurs causing them to run wildly, but eventually they return to their peaceful grazing. In Saloon, you walk through the swinging doors of a saloon and see the typical sights of the bar: the poker table, and of course, the piano player in his checkered shirt with suspenders. Dancin’ At The Campfire is just that. Happy, uninhibited, unwinding, at the end of a long day. Yahoo!
